“No One Left Behind” – Marta Sodano and the richness of diversity within the company

Last march, on the occasion of the World Day of People with Down Syndrome, she flew to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, to tell her experience of study and work. Marta Sodano, though, went over that achievement.

Our colleague, that works at the warehouse since July 2017, expressed her thoughts at the meeting “Quality of inclusion in social and school environments” organized between November 15th and 17th in Rimini by the publishing company Erickson, a meeting that saw the participation of about 4,000 teachers from all over Italy.

To get to know a bit more, we have talked to one of the protagonists that has been committed for years through the AGPD association (the organization of parents and people with Down syndrome) in declaring how disability, of any kind, must not be perceived as a stumbling obstacle.

Hi Marta, and congratulations! What was the theme of your intervention at the meeting?

“”By my testimony I wished to promote an ever inclusive school – The title “No one must be left behind”, was exactly the same I prepared for the New York meeting”.

What does “inclusive school” mean for you?

It means a school where teachers explain in a simple and understandable way for anyone, using for instance examples, images, videos.

Switching to a work environment, how did you meet Comac and what is your job?

“I started working in 2017 as a trainee and, as of 2019, I am part-time employed. I check and file certificates and documents such as the delivery notes for all the goods that go through our warehouse”.

Is there a side of yourself that your job helped to improve?

“Sure: I mostly learned to listen to others and cooperate with my colleagues, while before I aimed at being more concentrated on myself”.

What is the most positive aspect of your experience in Comac?

“The relationship with my colleagues – I never thought I would find true friends in a working place, I have build wonderful bonds”.

What recommendations would you give to someone with disability that wishes to be employed?

“Take on the responsibility of your own actions and, most of all, do not fear not to be able to do something due to diversity. Maybe in the beginning things may seem difficult, but through your commitment, the passion and willingness things become possible. The secret, for me, is to keep hoping that everything can go in the right way!”.
